Nigeria Not Ripe For State Police – IGP
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetoku has said that Nigeria is not ripe for state police as it will further polarise the states along ethnic lines.
Egbetoku bared his mind in Abuja on Monday while speaking at a one-day dialogue on state policing,
He also said state governors would abuse the structure for political gains, abuse of power and human rights.
Egebtoku, who was represented by Ben Okolo, an Assistant Inspector General, said the establishment of state police would also lead to multiple command structures in the states.
He said the state government lacked the resources to maintain the type of policing that the nation required.
Egbetokun suggested the merger of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to form a department in the Nigeria Police Force.
