The management of Melsmore Marine Limited, located in Victoria Island, Lagos, has entered into a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to workers’ welfare and industrial harmony.

Speaking during the signing ceremony recently, a foremost maritime labour leader and veteran sailor, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, described the agreement as a landmark achievement for both Melsmore Marine Limited and MWUN. He commended the company’s management for prioritising the welfare of its workforce, emphasising that “no progressive industrial firm neglects the wellbeing of its workers or the moral ethics of its operations”.

Bunu who is the current President of MWUN further praised Melsmore Marine Limited as an organisation that understands the dynamics of the maritime industry and values its human resources. According to him, “workers’ welfare is the foundation of industrial productivity. When employees are well cared for, the company’s growth is assured”.

He also noted that under the new CBA, the remuneration of Melsmore workers who are bonafide members of MWUN has been increased to reflect a living wage, taking into account the current economic realities in Nigeria. This, he said, demonstrates the company’s genuine concern for the standard of living and motivation of its employees.

Bunu assured Melsmore Marine Limited of MWUN’s continuous cooperation and support in maintaining a harmonious and productive relationship in the maritime sector. He expressed gratitude to the company’s management for their openness and willingness to engage constructively with the Union, describing the outcome as “a true partnership in progress”.
