ASRTI Congratulates Nigeria on 100 Years of Civil Aviation: A Century of Progress

The Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI) extends its warmest congratulations to Nigeria on this momentous occasion of 100 years of civil aviation activities in the country.
The journey, which began on November 1, 1925, when the first aircraft landed in Maiduguri on its way to Kano, has been a remarkable one. This historic event, undertaken by three British Royal Air Force De Havilland DH.9A planes commanded by Air Marshal Sir Arthur Coningham, marked the beginning of aviation in Nigeria.
A Century of Aviation in Nigeria: The Gains, The Pains, and The Prospects
Over the past 100 years, Nigeria’s civil aviation industry has experienced significant milestones, challenges, and growth. Aviation contributes approximately 4% to the nation’s GDP, and the industry has seen notable progress in areas such as civil aviation leadership, airline business, general aviation, training, airport development, and industry regulation.
To commemorate this centenary, ASRTI is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Aviation & Aerospace Development to organize a centenary celebration. The event, scheduled for December 1, 2025, at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, will feature seminars, panel discussions, and an Honours & Award Night to recognise aviation veterans and key stakeholders who have made significant contributions to the industry.
A Call to Action
The ASRTI invites the entire civil aviation community to join in celebrating this milestone. We urge state governments to partner with us to showcase aviation-related opportunities and inspire young people to pursue careers in the industry. The centenary celebration provides an opportunity for the industry to introspect, review its journey, and identify areas for improvement.
