Abiodun hails Bishop Okonkwo at 80
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Sunday described the founder and Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, Dr. Mike Okonkwo, as a “national treasure” whose life and ministry have impacted far beyond the pulpit.
The governor spoke at the thanksgiving service held at TREM’s national headquarters in Gbagada, Lagos, to mark Bishop Okonkwo’s 80th birthday.
Represented by the Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, Abiodun said the milestone was not only a celebration of a spiritual leader but also of an elder statesman “whose life exemplifies courage, integrity, and impeccable character.”
He described Okonkwo as an icon, father in faith, bridge builder, and true servant of God, noting that his purposeful and impactful life has inspired generations.
“Through TREM, Bishop Okonkwo has built more than churches — he has built people, raised leaders, and fostered hope across generations. His voice has consistently championed integrity, unity, and righteousness in a nation in need of such a moral compass,” Abiodun said.
He added that the bishop’s programmes had uplifted the underserved, offered hope to the hopeless, and created opportunities for countless individuals to realise their potential.
He pledged his administration’s continued recognition and support for the cleric, whose work he said aligns with the state’s Building Our Future Together agenda.
Abiodun also urged Nigerians to honour and celebrate those who have made genuine contributions to society while they are alive.
In his sermon, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, urged the congregation to emulate Bishop Okonkwo’s diligence in service to God.
Quoting from the Bible, Adeboye said: “Any diligent man will stand before kings and not mean men.”
He stressed that reaching the top requires diligence in hearing the word of God, prayer, worship, and holiness. He later prayed for the celebrant, his family, and the church.
Other goodwill messages came from prominent clerics, including the President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop Wale Oke.
In his response, Bishop Okonkwo expressed gratitude to Governor Abiodun, fellow church leaders, his family, and TREM members for celebrating him, pledging to remain dedicated to serving God and humanity for the rest of his life.
